Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. W. Potter”, 4p. quarto, Grafton, May 24, 1853, and reads in part: “...In this day, the speed and dispatch that is used in transporting the mail through our country, seems to almost annihilate distance, thoughts written in the morning may be perused by absent friends before the setting sun, although a distance of a hundred or more miles intervein between them. The Telegraph a modern invention, not only almost but quite annihilates distance, when a communication can be sent hundreds and thousands of miles in a moment of time as it were. Truly it may be said with some reason that mankind have arrived almost or quite to perfection in regard to the facility with which news is transported through the country. But not so I think as it regards our Railroads, the wanton sacrifice of human life requires that something more be done before they are considered perfect...Accidents no doubt will happen...but I believe they are mostly attributable to the carelessness and recklessness of those who have the management of the roads...” VG.
