Archive of 50 letters by hard-writing shoe dealer U.S. Gilbert, approximately 300 pages, octavo and quarto, ca. 1856-1858, Dubuque, Iowa to Millie Cooper, Adams, New York. A large collection of chatty letters kept by Gilbert's far-off fiancee back East. He writes of business, his new home and, of course, their future. A quick look at Iowa Civil War rosters does not show that he became a soldier a few years later, so he probably enjoyed married life far from the carnage on the front. Most of the letters have stamped covers. A clean lot with many exceptionally preserved letters. Overall Very Fine condition...Plus; Business card, 2 3/4" x 3 7/8", ca. late 1850's, Dubuque, Iowa. Printed on expensive coated stock, this card advertises the firm of Gilbert & Buchanan, Wholesale & Retail Dealers in Boots & Shoes. U.S. Gilbert is named at the bottom of the card. Some discoloration along the edges, else Very Fine condition.
