FIELD, Cyrus. (1819 - 1892) American financier who promoted the first trans-Atlantic cable. Field was also had a successful partnership with Jay Gould, but lost his fortune later in life. Manuscript Letter Signed, "Cyrus W. Field" 1p. octavo, March 7, 1863, addressed to a member of the Chamber of Commerce, asking if notices had been issued. VG....plus; FIELD, Cyrus. Field" 1p. octavo, June 16, 1876, New York, declining an invitation by the Chamber of Commerce for dinner at Delmonico's. VG....plus; OPDYKE, George (1805-1880) A merchant, a millionaire, and municipal reformer. He joined the Republican party because of its antislavery stance. He was elected mayor of New York City and held that post during the difficult years from 1861 until 1864. While he was mayor, the Civil War draft riots broke out in the city. Opdyke called in police and military to stop the riots and did not compromise with the rioters. His own home was threatened by the mobs and his factory destroyed. Autograph Letter Signed, "George Opdyke" 1-1/2p. octavo, October 18, 1862, Mayor's Office, New York, requesting assistance from the Chamber of Commerce for a "humane and really patriotic enterprise." Good.
