Later an intimate member of Andrew Jackson’s ‘Kitchen Cabinet.’ Made Postmaster under Jackson and served under Van Buren, he also was a business manager for Samuel F. Morse.Autograph Letter Signed, "Amos Kendall" 3p. quarto, November 21, 1836, Post Office Department, addressed to a member of the New York Chamber of Commerce, in part: "The general principle which should govern the location of Post Offices as laid down by you, is readily commended, nor is there any disposition to question your statement that 'nine tenths' of the postages in your city is paid by the persons doing business below Fulton Street. Yet, public opinion, were on such a subject, cannot be disregarded in your community. At an informal meeting of the Mayor and Common Council when I was in your City, it was stated and conceded that seven eights of the voters of the city were in favor of an uptown location…" Much more.
