PIERREPONT, Edwards (1817-1892) U.S. attorney general (1875-76) U.S. minister to Great Britain (1876-77).Autograph Letter Signed, “Edwards Pierrepont” 6p. octavo, July 17, 1879, Hotel Vendome, Paris, France, addressed to Rev. Thomas Rosecoe Rede Stebbing (1835-1926) naturalist and theological writer. In part: “...Edward is my only son and not ‘spoilt’....He never smokes and has no tendency to any vices; I believe that he has plenty of faults; he is gentle in manners, very strong and six feet high....I find two habits amongs young men in England which are quite in excess of the habits of New York; namely smoking and drinking wine. I do not think that wine is necessary when water is good and smoking is always bad fora young man and nevr good for anyone. I will never consent to his using tobacco in any form or for any purpose. It is much used by American Indians and why civilized men even imitated these savages I cannot understand....I insist taht he avoid what is called ‘society’ during terms time - and I wish that he would avoid it at all times. He is very fond of dancing - is very accomplished in it...I expect my son will be a lawyer...” Fine.
