RAMSEY, Alexander (1815-1903) Originally from Pennsylvania and served as that state's U.S. representative (1843-47). After moving to Minnesota and becoming involved with local politics, he became the first governor of the territory of Minnesota (1849-53). After Minnesota became a state, he again served as governor (1860-63) and as U.S. senator (1863-75). Ramsey was appointed to be U.S. secretary of war during President Rutherford B. Hayes' administration (1879-81). Autograph Letter Signed, "Alex. Ramsey" 1p. octavo, Janaury 20, 1890, St. Paul, addressed to the President, and reads in part: "…I learn that my friend Genl. Holibard…will retire…& that Genl. Chas. H. Thompkins is Senior in the order of succession….I would respectfully commend him to your favorable consideration…" Split repair, else Good....plus ROOT, Elihu (1845-1937) As secretary of war from 1899 to 1904, Root performed the services that moved Henry L. Stimson, himself a later secretary of war, to say that ‘no such intelligent, constructive, and vital force’ had occupied that post in American history. Autograph Letter Signed, "Lew Cass" 1p. quarto, September 15, 1859, Washington, Department of State, addressed to the President of the Chamber of Commerce of New York, pertaining to a letter addressed to President Buchanan "in relation to the lights needed on the Bahama Bank." About VG....plus; BELKNAP, William (1829 - 1890) Union brigadier general and Secretary of War in Grant's administration; impeached by the Senate for accepting bribes from Indian posts. Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm W. Belknap Secy of War", 2p. octavo, April 28, 1875, addressed to the Chairman of the Committee of Chamber of Commerce, declining an invitation to Chamber dinner. McCrary” 1p. octavo, January 24, 1879, on War Department stationary, in full “I have assigned Gelatt to duty here. I do not wish to order the exchange or to have it made except as a matter of free choice…” VG…plus; Manuscript Letter Signed, “Approved G. W. McCrary, Secy of War”, 1p. quarto, 1877, pertaining to a change in the Monthly Reports sent to the Adjutant General. VG.
