BANCROFT, George (1800-1891) Polk’s Secretary of the Navy, historian, and diplomat. Autograph Letter Signed, “George Bancroft” 2p. quarto, October, 1937, Massachusetts, with integral leaf addressed to Henry Dwight in New York, it reads in part: “...I think Mr. Trowbridge misjudged the Secretary of the Treasury. I never in my life transacted business with more facility, in a pleasant manner, or with more disptach...On reaching Washington I asked for Trowbridge. He was gone & I could not learn with whom he had left his papers...I went directly to Mr. Woodbury, stated to him the facts, & received from him an assurrance of his conviction that the bank was doing all in its powers & that he would not distress it. He further allowed me to say to the Committee of Ways & Means, his willingness to grant the banks a full year....My plan was immediately formed to obtain pledge from members enough to ensure the passage of the amendment for extension...” Much more.
