Broadside, TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, one page, 12 1/2" x 24", February, 1850, Washington, D.C. Funds were still being solicited for constructing the Washington Monument even after its cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848. The massive obelisk was still only a partial form during the Civil War and would not be finished until February 21, 1885. This early appeal, distributed by the National Washington Monument Society, eloquently states the case for financing the project. It is signed in print by such political luminaries as Zachary Taylor, James Knox Polk, Millard Fillmore, George M. Dallas, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, and Daniel Webster. Slight folds, else Very Fine condition.
