MONROE, James (1758-1831) Fifth President of the United States 1817-25. Member of the Continental Congress, Virginia Senator and Representative, Governor, Secretary of State and Secretary of War. He served two terms as President and won in a landslide against John Q. Adams in 1820 with 231 electoral votes to Adams’ 1. He administration was called the Era of Good Feeling, and Monroe led the country through the First Seminole War, saw Spain cede Florida to the United States, the Missouri Compromise was enacted and Monroe drafted the Monroe Doctrine, which warned the European powers not to intervene in the Western Hemisphere.
