MONROE, James (1758-1831) Fifth President of the United States 1817-25. Member of the Continental Congress, Virginia Senator and Representative, Governor, Secretary of State and Secretary of War. He served two terms as President and won in a landslide against John Q. Adams in 1820 with 231 electoral votes to Adams’ 1.
