Autograph Letter Signed "J Vail", 3 pages with address panel, April 7, 1832, Fort Snelling, Minnesota to W.A. Gordon, Washington, D.C. A young lieutenant details the hardships of being stationed in the far northwest of Jacksonian America. He writes in small part: "...were you stationed on the 46th degree of latitude where the winters last seven months in the year, and when the Thermometer descends to 30 below Zero (at times) would you hunt a wolf, and run over the prairies in two or three feet snow...my duty required it...we had the biggest kind of winter and I suffered considerably by the cold, but thank heaven the snow is off the ground, and the sun once more appears, and we commenced to crawl out of our winter holes like so many rattlesnakes...". Light stains, splits, and old repairs. Good condition.
