ROSS, Reuben (?-1839) Texas Revolutionary Army officer, he was elected Colonel of the ‘Texan Allies’ and defeated Jose Ignacio Pavon in teh battle of Alcantra. Killed in a dual with Henry McCulloch on Christmas eve in 1839. Autograph Letter Signed, “Reuben Ross”, 3p. folio, Houston, Texas, August 10, 1838, with integral leaf addressed to his aunt in Virginia, with “NEW ORLEANS” circular postal stamp as well as manuscript Houston cancellation, the letter reads in part: “...I mention to my dear Aunt the heart rendering news which it becomes my duty to communicate...it has been the will of our heavenly Father to deprive you of a beloved and affectionate son. Your dear son John is no more....He left here on the second of last month in company with President Houston...Genl. Houston remained with him until after the arrival of Doctor Asbel Smith...” Much more on the death of his cousin. VG. Ross is scarce in any form.
