Autograph Letter Signed "Wm Arbuckle", 3 pages, quarto, April 25, 1846, Fort Smith, Arkansas to Brigadier General Tower, Adjutant General, Washington, D.C. This manuscript copy of a general's letter is docketed as being "...in relation to Cherokee affairs" and reads in small part as follows: "...On the subject of rations issued to the Cherokee refugees I have to say that I have used every precaution in my power to restrict them as much as possible...The refugees, since the opening of the spring, have been encouraged to put in a crop...they must not expect further assistance from government once this years crop comes in...Affairs near the line remain pretty much as of the date of my last report...Two or three murders have occurred near the line, and within the nation, but they have not been attributed...A band of marauders, whites and half breeds, infest the borders...I have given instructions to arrest and secure these desperadoes...I learn that two executions have recently taken place in the Cherokee Nation...". Small splits along the edges of folds, else Fine condition.
