Autograph Letter Signed "Augustus", 3 pages with address panel, quarto, April 22, 1849, Independence, Missouri to his father Peter B. Carrywood, Seneca County, New York. Hoping to strike it rich in California, a son writes home in part: "...We go from here tomorrow Will Camp out on the prairie for a few days Will get off by the first of May...the Ithaca company arrived here last Saturday...I declare I would not miss of having the trip to Calafornia for five hundred Dollars. I expect to find hardship. that dont discourage me...I am as fat as a bear and same the colour of an Indian...I have some money left and shall take it with me if matters in Calafornia should not come up to my expectations. I will something to fall back on...". Fine condition.
