Manuscript booklet, MEMORANDA OR CALIFORNIA JOURNAL by Joel Grover, 8 pages, folio, May 9, 1851 - July 15, 1851, beginning at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This detailed account of a wagon train's journey west is organized much like a ship's log, giving the date, wind direction, and weather before each brief entry. The content is restricted to road conditions, naming campsites, and landscape descriptions. Judging from a Fort Laramie entry dated July 8, the journal recounts nothing west of present-day Wyoming. Bound in pink paper wraps imprinted with an advertisement for Wm. H. Baton's English, Commercial and Classical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. Overall Fine condition...Plus; Six pieces of printed and manuscript ephemera originating in Kansas and Iowa, 1850's - 1870's. Included is a an 1856 inventory of goods from Lawrence, Kansas in which a buffalo robe is itemized. Overall Fine condition.
