Autograph Letter Signed “Joseph Howard”, 3 pages with address panel, quarto, February 22, 1852, Downieville, California to James W. Howard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A gold miner writes in part to his brother back East: “...I sent you two purses of gold dust...It is worth more at the mint than $16 per ounce, and I would like you to get as much as you can for it...Mining is a hard life. Much harder than you have any idea of...Downieville was completely burnt down on the night of the 20th December...no lives were lost except two pigs perished in the flames...I own some several quartz claims, and if i had the gold out of them, I would be worth some million dollars but getting it out, there is the difficulty...I have now some $300 with me...”.
