Autograph Letter Signed "D.T. Russ", 4 pages, quarto, March 3, 1852, Springfield, California to Isaac, location unknown. A recent arrival in California recounts his voyage and speculates on the chances of a successful venture. The letter reads in part: "... Feb 5th we arived in Sanfrancisco 31 days from Ny...most of the passengers went to the northern mines...came to the southern mines took up a claim in the town of Springfield...I suppose you have not fully given up the idea of coming to California and if not you would like to know something of the prospect of getting gold...I have not been here long enough to find a great deal about mining...if they find a place where they can make 5 dollars a day theyl work a little while then start for another place perhaps hear of some rich diggins just discoverd...it will spoile 600 dollars to cum to california and get home again that is a good deal of money and it will take a great while to get it here or any where...I think if I was in your place I would not leave my farm and good society for what I could get in California...". Light stains, folds. Overall Very Good condition.
