Autograph Letter Signed, Capt. M.M. Clark, 2p. quarto, October 23, 1855, Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, addressed to W.A. Gordon, and reads in part: “...You must not & I presume do not under exisiting circumstances, expect much from me. Could I be out & about I should gather much in regard to Indian affairs...Great trouble ahead I fear - great expense of money & what is far worse possible a great loss of life. There appears to be but little doubt that the Indians have had a general understanding (since the treaties made last spring or summer by Gov. Stevens & Genl. Palmer) to have a pretty general rising. It is said to be the intention of the Volunteers to ‘wipeout’ the Indians. That is they will not spare any having a red skin, no age or sex and save them all must go - Extermination is the word. Some 116 friendly Indians of all kinds (men women & children) on a reservation, about Rogue River, were killed by the whites, a few days since, none they could find were spared...” More. VG.
