Autograph Letter Signed "D.S. Miles", 4 pages, quarto, May 18, 1855, Fort Fillmore, New Mexico to W.A. Gordon, Washington, D.C. The implications of a permanent Army post in Apache country are discussed here. The letter reads in small part: "...my force was so imposing that the Apaches yielded and sued for peace and I found out their secret hiding place and principle summer residence...If they make a treaty of peace under the circumstances of our holding this position, they will be obliged to observe it, but may suppose as soon as they find out we are building a post there, they will fight, which will be that of a dying gasp, most desperate on their part...". Light fading, else VF condition.
