Autograph Letter Signed "Geo Gibson", 8 pages, quarto, February 1, 1855, Albuquerque, New Mexico to "My Dear Gordon", probably W.A., Washington, D.C. Gibson describes the loose and often dangerous living he encounters on the frontier. The letter reads in small part: "...Life here is worth about six bits...Since my sojourns in Albuquerque four murders have been committed...Never have I seen a place where the laws are more wretchedly administered...Trial by jury is more than a farce. Six shooters and butcher knives rule the day here. As for me, I girth on my pistol and knife at night as regularly as i take my supper. We all of us do it - have to do it...The women are far from being beautiful. The great charm is to get one that approaches being white. Virtue is almost unknown...pack her off to your room if you have reason to believe that she is the clean thing...". Fine condition.
