Autograph Letter Signed "William", 2 pages, quarto, August 6, 1857, Camp near Fort Clark, Texas to John B. Robertson, Amherst County, Virginia. This letter, written by a soldier in the Texas back country, reads in part: "...We have been traveling through such a miserably dry and grass-less country...There are but few settlements for 50 miles back on our road. and many good houses are standing unoccupied, the settlers having been driven off by dry weather & Indians...So far we have not suffered any serious inconvenience from the scarcity of water...There is one thing has surprised me a good deal in this expedition & that is the rates of compensation given to different persons. Mr. Howard, who is a fine engineer, & who was appointed as a scientific man, gets $4 per diem. Mr. Supple, of Richmond, who was clerk to a commission merchant in Richmond, & a man of no education or pretensions of any kind, gets $5 per diem...". With stamped cover hand canceled at Fort Clark. Folds, else Fine condition.
