Autograph Letter Signed "D S Miles", 4 pages, octavo, April 4, 1857, Fort Thorn, New Mexico to W.A. Gordon, Washington, D.C. An officer stationed in the southwest peppers a friendly letter with his political opinions. He writes in small part: "...Forts Thorn, Tucson and Fort Fillmore are in the southern part of New Mexico and over 300 miles south of Sante Fe and 20 days behind the arrival of the Texas Mail from San Antonio Texas - you will confer a lasting favor on all the ex-patriated bipeds of this region if you succeed in learning them a little geographical knowledge...I often imagine, the confessor of Genl Scott on his death bed, will be troubled in giving remission for his many acts of prejudice and injustice...I am truly glad that Pierce & his Secty of War's administration has ended- and so must you all. I see it stated in the papers of Jeff Davis popularity in the Army...except his special favorites, whom he has promoted, he would not get a vote in the Army for any thing whatever...The Indians are at open war, and we are busily preparing for campaigns against them on a scale never before attempted...".
