Autograph letter Signed "D.S. Miles", 3 pages, quarto, April 17, 1858, Fort Defiance, New Mexico to W.A. Gordon, Washington, D.C. The author, Colonel Miles, wrote in part: "...I passed through this awful, remarkable hole in the earth, without losing a man, but killed two Indians, wounded many of them and captured six prisoners - this canon in many places is 1500 feet deep, men on the top look like pigmies and mules about the size of rats...The Indians poured their arrows into us - but before they reached us, lost their momentum and fell harmless, horizontal, their bullets did the same...I have as yet but 425 men to conduct the war. i want 1500...it takes old soldiers and good marksmen to deal with these Indians, who can bring 2500 warriors into the field...These Indians are not used to fighting and as yet have no common head. If the war lingers the chiefs will settle their jealousies unite under one man, by being shot at become more daring and will become formidable...". Very Fine condition.
