Manuscript document, SPECIAL ORDERS NO 127, 2 pages, quarto, October 6, 1867, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Written in the name of Major Charles Whiting, this document reads in part: "...all the available force of Companies "I" and "G" 3rd U.S. Cavalry, will at 6 o'clock a.m. to morrow proceed in pursuit of about three hundred Navajo Indians who are reported to have left this reservation and to be endeavoring to cross the Rio Grande en route to their old haunts. If said Indians are overtaken Major Tarlton will endeavor to induce them to return...Should they on the contrary manifest any hostile intentions and still insist on proceeding across the Rio Grande or remaining absent from this Reservation they will be attacked, and, if possible, every male adult killed and the women and children brought back...". Excellent penmanship and content. VF condition.
