CAREY, Matthew (1760-1840). Philadelphia publisher, essayist, and philanthropist. The Irish-born Carey reported politics and was an astute critic of counterproductive partisan bickering. Manuscript booklet, 31 pages, 3 1/2" x 6", ca. 1813, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here Matthew Carey copied and signed six letters he received from John Adams and two he received from Thomas Jefferson. The Adams letters recount events of 1775-1776 while Jefferson expresses thanks for a book on American Naval history that Carey had sent. VF condition.
