Crockett, Claude Gibson (1912 - 2000) In 1933, he started drawing for the Washington Evening Star, under the direction of fellow cartoonist Jim Berryman. Initially Crockett drew illustrations, gag and sports cartoons. In the 1940s, Crockett's work began to alternate with Berryman's on the editorial page. Eventually, Crockett replaced him as editorial cartoonist in 1965 upon Berryman's retirement. Signed political cartoon, 15" x15" original editorial cartoon on art board, captioned "Warning to All Hoarders" being listed on a chalkboard by Uncle Sam as (C.F.) Brannan asks "What does he mean" as he looks on in puzzlement with two armloads of "surplus food" in grocery bag and basket. Charles Franklin Brannan was the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1948 to 1953 under President Harry Truman. He advocated for the Brannan Farm Plan as part of President Truman's Fair Deal program is 1949. Art bears name of cartoonist Gib Crockett and is personally inscribed, "My best to Secy of Agriculture Brannan...you are so right... Gib Crockett." Dated Sept. 19 in pencil. Expected wear and wrinkling from use of art materials on the board, o/w very good condition.
