Newspaper, “The Union,” Washington City, CD, February 25, 1851, 4pp., disbound. There are several reports concerning the resistance by Boston citizens of the Federal Marshalls who were taking the fugitive slave Shadrach Minkins. From the back page, a 1/2 column report, “Events in Boston,” reviews the implications of the the mob resistance, “... amob of one hundred fifty or twoo hundred colored people could find there way through the passages of the court house ... and bear off a prisoner from the custody of the marshall ... without interference from the city police ... will be difficult to reconcile with the idea that the citizens of Boston are ... determined to enforce the laws ..” Then, also back page, “The Message” [by President Fillmore] reviews the Fugitive Slave Law and the circumstances in Boston, two columns, in part “I transmit to the Senate a copy of the proclamation issued by me on the 18th instant in relation to those unexpected and deplorable occurances in Boston ...” [which refers directly to the proclamation in the previous lot]. On page three, there are another three columns of Senate debate regarding the incident.
