A great nineteenth century acquired Mount Vernon relic being approximately 1 1/4" (at the widest) x 3 3/4," piece of cherry wood, fashioned into a crude hatchet form, with paper label with period brown ink inscription, reading, in full: "Hatchet made from cherry tree grown on Mt. Vernon by last slave on plantation. Brought home by Mary Elizabeth Boone May 1898." Cellophane tape stains attaching the label to the wood. Overall VG
