FRANKLIN, William (1731-1813) Illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin. Royal Governor of New Jersey. When the Revolution began, William remained loyal to England. With Ben in America and William in England, father and son found themselves on opposite sides of battle during the American Revolution. This forever strained their relationship. Ben's Last Will and Testament left nearly none of his wealth to William, claiming that if William's England had won the war, Ben would have never had any wealth to leave. Manuscript Document Signed, "Wm. Franklin" as Governor, 1p. large folio, October 23, 1770, countersigned by Peter Kemble as speaker and Stephen Crane as speaker of the House of Representatives, it reads in part: "...An Act to Naturalize Frederick Outgelt, Leonard Nymaster, Peter Supp, John Borver, Lawrence Eykeinier, George Obert, Peter Obert and John Irick....by their Humble Petitions have set forth that they were born under the Dominions of Foreign Powers in Amity with Great Britain but and now settled or and desirous of settling within this Colony of New Jersey, and of Enjoying the privileges of his Majesty's Natural Free born subjects therein, and as they profess the protestant religion and have given Testimony of their Duty Loyalty and Affection to his Majesty King George the Third...Be it Therefore Enacted by the Governor Council and General Assembly and it is hereby Enacted by the Authority of the same that...Each of them and Each of their heirs shall be and are intitled unto the same Laws Liberty rights and privileges as any of his Majesty's Natural Free born subjects within the same Laws..."
