DeLANCY, James (1703-1760). Colonial governor, lieutenant governor and chief justice of New York. Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page. 6 ½” x 8”. New York, 29 July 1755. To Governor Hopkins (Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island), “Sir, the inclosed I received yesterday evening from Virginia by Capt. Luckling of his Majesty’s sloop of War Jamaica, it sails this week for Hallifax. I am Sir, Your most humble servant, James De Lancey.” Earlier in the month, De Lancey had attended a governors council in Virginia to develop Colonial defense plans with General Edward Braddock against the French. This letter would appear to be following up that meeting with information from Virginia relative to the defense plans. A nice association of the two governors. Fine.
