An authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, July 1740, 52pp., disbound, near fine. From the interior, a 1-1/4 page report, under “Extract of a Letter from S. Carolina.” In part, “Sometime since a Proclamation was published at Augustine in which the King of Spain promised protection and freedom to all Negro Slaves who would resort thither. ... On the 9th ... some Angola Negroes assembled, to the number of Twenty, and one who was called Jimmy was their Captain. they surprised a warehouse belonging to Mr. Hutchenson, at a place called Stonehow; there they killed Mr. Robert Bathurst and Mr. Gibb ... Several Negroes joined them .. so that they were above Sixty, some say a Hundred... the militia being raised ... with great briskness pursued them ..The Negroes were soon routed though they behaved boldly ... several being killed ... about 30 escaped from the fight. .. in the whole action about 40 Negroes and 20 Whites were killed. ...”
