WAYNE, Anthony (1745 - 1796) "Mad Anthony", American Revolutionary brigadier general who distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and in the brilliant capture of the British garrison at Stony Point. Being a good student in mathematics, Anthony Wayne opened a surveyor's office in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1765, at the age of 20, he was sent to Nova Scotia to locate a grant of land from the Crown. The lands owners made Wayne superintendent of the settlement. He held this post until 1767, when he returned home and resumed his profession as surveyor. Autograph Document with “Wayne” penned 10 times in the text, one page, 27” by 15.5”. On vellum. Three wax seals at lower right next to the signatures of Gen. Wayne’s parents, “Isaac Wayne” and “Elizabeth Wayne” and “Isaac Davis” as Justice. Soiling and rippling, common in such documents. Docket by Anthony Wayne, “1774 Deed / Isaac Wayne ... / to / Benjamin Marpel...” Fine condition. A lengthy document with over 1,000 words in Wayne’s hand as a surveyor. Wayne’s parents, Isaac Wayne, “Yeoman,” and Elizabeth Wayne sell “Forty Seven acres and half and ten perches” of land in Willistown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Benjamin Marple, “Wheelwright,” for £256. The history of ownership is traced back to a 1000 acre “Patent of Confirmation bearing date the ninth day of July Anno Domini 1687” to Samuel Jobson with all the owners of the land since then mentioned with the date of each deed. In part, “...unto Gabriel Wayne in fee by Indenture of the Fifteenth day of May 1732 who with Elizabeth his wife by their Indenture of the twelfth day of May 1737 Granted the same unto Isaac Wayne partly hereto in Fee who with Elizabeth his wife by their Indenture of the Twelfth day of February 1739 Granted to same unto John Wayne in Fee who with Jane his wife by their Indenture of the first day of May 1741 Re-Granted the same Land & Premises unto the said Isaac Wayne in fee...” Anthony Wayne has drawn and labeled a 2.5” x 2” rectangular map of the land involved at the lower left. Wayne has penned the names of the adjoining land holders: Joshua Evans, Sam McCue, Thomas Hall, and John Marple.
