A partial volume of The (London) Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Chronicle (Vol. 63), 1793. There are 5 monthly issues roughly 5x8-inches. Jan.-June, but March has been removed, accounting for breaking of spine and a few loose pages, but rag paper in good shape, very readable. From Philadelphia, "Our worthy President (George Washington) has been unanimously re-elected; not a voice through all the Continent against him." Also from America, "The war with the Indians continues with unabated fury; it is feared that a general confederation had been formed among the Southern and Northern Indian nations to attack the American frontier…" (Feb., page 177); Also, report that "Sixty Seneca chiefs travel to Miami Town to counsel with hostile Indians to bring about peace with them and the United States. (Page 80). From America (May, page 472) comes a report, "The Americans have experienced a defeat by the Indians between Detroit and Miami Towns, in which, it was reported, 700 of the former were killed and the rest put to flight. The force of the Americans was 1500. General Wayne, it was added, had resigned his command." That's "Mad" Anthony Wayne, who was chosen by President Washington to lead the Legion of the United States on a military expedition to the Northwest Territory in order to expel the British from land they had ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Paris, but subsequently refused to vacate. The Native American tribes in the region opposed any attempts made to establish settlements in the Northwest Territory, and were responsible for numerous attacks against civilians. A report that (Jean-Pierre) "Blanchard, the celebrated Aeronaut, is here now…" According to the Britannica website, this event was "Blanchard's…first balloon flight in North America, on January 9, 1793, when he ascended from the Washington Prison Yard in Philadelphia and landed in Gloucester county, New Jersey. This flight, observed by President George Washington, spurred interest in ballooning in the United States." (Feb., page 178.) Also report on the U.S. Supreme Court in what would become the case of Chisholm v Georgia, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states were subject to the authority of the federal government. This decision initiated a series of events culminating in the 11th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, an amendment limiting the judicial power of the U.S. Supreme Court. (Page 177) Other reports: "Settlement by blacks of Sierra Leone with notes on progress of that colony and the mortality rates. (Page 80); Abstract of act for regulating "aliens arriving in this kingdom (Great Britain), which will read hauntingly familiar to Americans today. (Page 83); "Particular Account of the murder of Louis XVI Jan 20, 1793 (pages 85-86). That's execution of Louis XVI by guillotine, a major event of the French Revolution. Along with his last will and testament presented (Feb,. 173); An oration on the discovery of America. (Beware: Christopher Columbus is mentioned here), (May, pages 433-434). Lots of monthly coverage of Parliament, various obits, biographical anecdotes and ongoing coverage of The National Convention, an assembly in France (1792-1795) during the French Revolution. At least 15 illustrations of landscapes, portraits, churches, bridges and statues and iconography.
