An excellent 19th century hand colored reprint lithograph of Paul Revere's, ca. 1770 engraving showing British troops under the command of General Thomas Gage landing in Boston in response to the British Government's enforcement of the Townsend Acts. A flowing ribbon at the top is boldly, entitled: "A View of Part of the Town of Boston in New England and British Ships of War Landing Their Troops. 1768." The troops were called for by Massachusetts' Royal Governor Francis Bernard after a near violent clash with the citizenry following the seizure of John Hancock's merchant ship the Liberty which was suspected of smuggling. Gage's men occupied, as Revere shows in his engraving, a defenseless and peaceful Boston on Sept. 20, 1768. Politically astute, Revere sought to follow the success the patriot cause received after his rendition of the Boston Massacre. Borrowing from previously published works of Boston. Revere produced his own rendition of that city's hostile occupation by British military force in order to gain worldwide support for the American cause. Post Boston Massacre publication is evidenced by a fallen British soldier of the King's 29th Regiment, the unit responsible for the massacre, being trampled by a Native American in the lower right corner.
