Brass (with rich age patina) 40MM dia. (slightly over 1 ½ inches); obverse with relief bust of British Admiral Boscawen; relief "ADM'L BOSCAWEN TOOK CAPE BRETON." Reverse with five ships in foreground and a curious view of the attack on the city with cannonball striking a high tower on a hill and relief "LOUISBOURG / JUL 26, 1758." Smooth wear mostly on the higher points of the bust and the reverse scene, but exc. Betts No. 403 where it is noted that it was struck in brass and pewter and specifically mentioned the curious background scene. Betts also pointed out that: "…These medals are rare because of very inferior workmanship and hence, when struck they were not thought worth preserving." (!!)…enhance represents very rare Americana.
