Nuremberg Chronicle Leaf, 11-1/2” x 17,” hand colored. The Nuremberg Chronicle the world’s first printed history book. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is the best-documented early printed books and one of the first to successfully integrate hand colored illustrations and text. This leaf, printed on both sides, includes an illustration of St. Thomas Aquinas, Carolus Rex (King Charles), and Flagellation. The other side shows three Popes and what appears to be Jesus with dove above his head. VG
