Autograph Letter Signed "Danl Morgan," 3pp. plus integral address panel, 8vo, "Soldiers Rest" (near Winchester, Virginia), July 16, 1799, to William Cobbett, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it reads, in part: "…I received your letter of the 4thinst. Accusing me of not paying my subscription for your papers, to this charge I plead guilty - but perhaps when you speak to the young man in your office you will not think my crime so desperate, as I called upon him the week before I left Philadelphia wishing to know what I owed that I might pay it…at the same time I requested him to alter my name as my name is Daniel Morgan & not Benjamin - when the papers arrived in Winchester the postmaster not knowing such as person as Benjamin Morgan in this quarter of the world….it was never my intention to do wrong if I could avoid it…I approve of your paper as I think it has been & is of real utility to this Government…". Morgan was one of the American Revolution's most effective patriot generals. His tactical genius was best demonstrated when he destroyed Banastre Tarlton's Legion at Cowpens in South Carolina on January 17, 1781.
