Three months of “The London Magazine, or, Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer”, London, July, August and September 1775, still bound together, approx. 52 pages each, VG. The London Magazine was founded in 1732 in political opposition to the Tory-based Gentleman's Magazine. From the August issue, under Debates of a Political Society, are three pages describing the debates on how to handle the American colonies crisis. ... plus, From the July issue, “ Whitehall, July 18, 1775. Lieutenant-General Gage, in his Letters to the Earl of Dartmouth, dated June 12, 1775, gives an Account that the Town of Boston continued to be surrounded by a large Body of Rebel Provincials, and that all Communication with the Country was cut off; ... that the; rebels had been burning houses ... the reappearance of the rebels strength, and the large columns seen pouring ... “ Gage continues with details of the skirmish. ... plus, From the September issue, “The following true copy of the Petition from the General Congress in America ... Sept 4, 1775 ... In small part, “...he union between our Mother Country and these colonies, and the energy of mild and just government, produced benefits so remarkably important, and afforded such an assurance of their permanency and increase, that the wonder and envy of other Nations were excited ... We therefore beseech your Majesty, that your royal authority and influence may be graciously interposed to procure us relief [sic] from our afflicting fears and jealousies occasioned by the system before mentioned, and to settle peace through every part of your dominions, with all humility submitting to your Majesty's wise consideration, whether it may not be expedient for facilitating those important purposes ...” John Dickinson drafted the Olive Branch Petition, which was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5 and submitted to King George on July 8, 1775. It was an attempt to assert the rights of the colonists while maintaining their loyalty to the British crown. King George refused to read the petition and on August 23 proclaimed that the colonists had "proceeded to open and avowed rebellion."
