Autograph Letter Signed, 2-1/8p. quarto, Easton, September 4, 1779, and reads in part: “...Yours of the 15 of June last I received by Col. Sidman...your favour of June 1778 by post I did not receive till about 3 weeks before Mr. Sidman’s return...The inhabitants of Boston, I know, have suffered much, but I hope the day will come, and is now nigh at hand, when they will be rewarded with the spoil of their enemy....I am sorry for the death of brother George - I had advised him as much as possible not to go to the Grenades, as it was a sickly place...I should think, since the surrender of the Island that Brother Thomas could find an opportunity of returning to Boston...at present am much engaged in the public service which I purpose to resign by the last of October next, having served my country since the beginning of hostilities, but am now really quite tired of public service and think once more to enter into a private life...” Blank portion of integral leaf missing, else VG.
