Jacob Burck (1907-1982), Active in the Communist movement from 1926 as a political cartoonist and muralist, Burck quit the Communist Party after a visit to the Soviet Union in 1936. fter returning from the USSR in 1937, Burck went to work as an editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, before moving to the Chicago Daily Times in 1938. Burck won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning while at the Chicago Daily Times in 1941. Political Signed Cartoon, "Burck", 15 x 20-inch original editorial cartoon from the Chicago Sun-Times, 1949, on sketching stock captioned "Rock a Bye Baby" (in cut out lettering taped at top). Depicts then-secretary of agriculture Charles Brannan feeding a large hog from a "pork Prices" bottle as he rocks the animal to sleep. Brannan was the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1948 to 1953. In 1949, he advocated the Brannan Plan as part of President Truman's Fair Deal program. Brannan wanted to guarantee farmers income, while letting free market forces determine the prices of commodities. That plan was not enacted by the Republican controlled congress, which was focusing on the Cold War. Inscribed "To the Honorable Secretary Charles F. Brannan with all good wishes from Burks". Very good condition.
