If you collect covers that have the original letters with them, here is a nice one! The cover has a beautiful Charleston, S.C. Jan. 30 1862 cancellation. The writer of the letter is Martin V. Barkley Company D 18th South Carolina Infantry. Barkley is writing his brother from Sullivan’s Island, Charleston, South Carolina. The letter talks about a big review by General Ripley and many of the folks from Charleston came to see it. Interestingly, Barkley goes on to state, “They have been sinking vessels in the channel, but they sink them very slow.” And because of the Confederacies fortifications, Barkley states, “I don’t think that they will ever try to come in here.” Barkley goes on to talk about sickness in the regiment and of course asks his brother to send money! A nice Charleston letter and cover.
