Jonathan Fitch (1727 - 1793). American patriot, commanded the 2nd regiment of militia in 1775, State Commissary of Connecticut in 1776 in which role he was responsible ofr suppling the state and Continental troops. Autograph Letter Signed. 1 page. New Haven, Sept. 4, 1776. To Ephraim Strong concerning the return of army deserters from New York. "General Spencer has sent up an account of a number of the Militia who have deserted from the army at New York and begs that they may be sent back and says it is a shameful piece of conduct and hopes they will return for the Honor of Connecticut. And further sais if they quickly return back he will use what influence he has to obtain a pardon for them but if they do not, no doubt they will be brought back by Force and he does not yet know that the General is acquainted with it - The Persons names in your town who are returned as deserters are as follows: Enoch Clark, Thos. Clark, John Buckingham & Andrew Northrop - I must be of you to see that they go back or be sent immediately or they must suffer the consequence which will be bad enough for them & dishonor to this State which I would be sorry for & sir your compliance herein will oblige the Public & your most Humble Servant." Boldly signed by Fitch. Some paper loss. A fine letter related to desertion during the war.
