Carte-de-visite Photograph Signed “M.C. Lee” on lower mount. Sepia, 2.25” x 3.5” image, overall, 2.5” x 3.75”. Imprint on verso: “Stonewall / Art Gallery. / Boude & Miley, / Lexington, / Va.” Above imprint, penned by Mrs. Lee: “For my kind though / unknown friend / T.L. Jones / M.C. Lee.” Fading and toning to image, trimmed at top edge. Mounting remnants on verso. Vey Good condition. Mrs. Robert E. Lee’s “kind though unknown friend” was Thomas Laurens Jones (1819-1887). Born in North Carolina and raised in South Carolina, T.L. Jones moved to Kentucky in 1849 became a member of the Kentucky Legislature (1853-1855). Even though he opposed secession, he was arrested in 1862 as a Southern sympathizer and was imprisoned for three months at the Newport Barracks in Kentucky and at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives (1867-1871, 1875-1877).
