Slave bill of sale, 2pp. legal size folio, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, March 19, 1838 being and official bill of sale of "a certain negro woman named Fanny aged twenty five and her child Mantraville age about two years both slave s for life," reading, in very small part: " - Margaret M. Morris formerly wife of Presley L. Stephenson, deceased - for and in consideration of the sum Six hundred and Fifty dollars - paid by Jonathan K. Gorman - a certain negro woman named Fanny aged twenty five and her child Mantraville age about two years both slaves for life. They being the same slaves purchased by - Presley L. Stephenson deceased in the year A. D. 1836 in the state of Kentucky at the request and for the account of said Jonathan K. Gorman and for whom he did not receive a transfer on title from - Presley L. Stephenson - the said - Margaret M. Morris - shall and will warrant and forever defend the said Slaves from the claim or claims - thus done and passed at the late residence of P. L. Stephenson deceased in the Parish and state aforesaid on this nineteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight in the presence of Henry Leonard and John W.
