A stirring war-date, ca. 1861 printed broadside entitled: THE SLAIN AT BALTIMORE!, published by A. W. Auner, Philadelphia, and measuring 9 1/2" x 6". While en route to Washington on April 19, 1861, the 6th Massachusetts Volunteers was viciously attacked by the citizens of Baltimore. A full-scale riot ensued. The result was twenty-six men killed and over one hundred wounded. The regiment's fallen quickly became martyrs to the Northern cause and patriotic verse was published throughout the north proclaiming vengeance. This poetic broadside, reads, in part: "There's sorrow…for Freedom's new slain martyrs,-the Dead of Baltimore! There's a swelling cry for vengeance…the hosts of truth are rising….from the great woods of Maine…from the fair Green Mountain state…the hosts of war are swarming…they have felt the Southfron’s insults, they have borne his bitter taunts…and childish vaunts…to a man the North has risen, and the Southrons shall be taught the weakness of their idol god…their only skill is insolence…up and at them freemen!…teach…all the lawless, the dignity of law…and that every rebel leader shall meet at traitor's fate…'. A truly historic piece of Americana attesting to the overwhelming sense of duty most Northerners felt after Union troops and Fort Sumter were fired upon by angry Southerners. House in a wood frame and ready for display. Overall very good.
