Autograph Letter Signed, 3p. folio, St. Augustine, Florida, December 6, 1779, with integral leaf addressed to Captain Bissett in London, and reads in part: “...[the letter] gives me an opportunity of acquinting you that a Spanish Privateer of C. Guno and 50 men from the Havanna put into the Muspeto Inlet on Sunday...they went up to America in their Boats where they took Andrew Turnbull and 18 Negroes - fortunatly Isaac escaped and went and alarmed Sanders, and teh people at the Orange Grove, by which means your negroes escaped; for the next day they obliged Andrew Turnbull to pilot them to your place which they found abandoned by all but one Negro wench who was much burnt. Her they carried off and everything else they could lay their hands on - All your negro clothing & books, papers, in short they left nothing...Andw. Turnbull who made his escaped tells me all your other Negroes are safe and they did not look near the Orange Grove...By the stupidty of Moultrie the most trifling animal on Earth, the accounts did not reach town before Wednesday eveng. and the Spainards left...that morning after having burnt the greatest part of America....an Armed Sloop and a Gally of War..run down...and is since returned here. The Galley has never since been heard of, and I fear she with the 25 men that were in her are gone to the bottom...I have ordered up Mr. Taylor’s negroes to Mr. Draytons Old Plantation near Godfrey’s. Yours will go to your own place...” About VG.
