1709 Dated Lidded Pewter Tankard, Very Fine. 9.25"-high, Germanic tankard. Made at the start of the 18th century, this tankard has apparently seen a very long period of use, as the top of the lid is engraved with the owner's initials "F.M.L." and the date "1766." Inside the lid, a maker's mark of a horse carrying a standard and "1709" is struck three times, establishing the date of manufacture. The tankard is further adorned with a very large spherical thumbpiece, and its base is mounted atop a flaring, convex foot. Being almost 300 years old, it is in excellent condition, and shows the minor dents and wear typical of this soft metal, along with a minor period repair to the foot. An excellent piece, and certainly among the earliest attainable without spending a fortune--examples of this vintage in silver go for well in the five-figures.
