Autograph letter signed, 2pp., 4to, Philadelphia, November 3, 1766, to Samuel Hunter, Fort Augusta, Pennsylvania, reading, in part:"…Colonel Francis delivered me an Order for a parcel of Goods which you wanted for the Indian Trade, among which were some Rum, Sugar, Molasses, powder and lead…these articles are always bought for ready money, but as I suppose you were ignorant of that, I advance the cash for them for you…I hope you will remit the amount of them as soon as you can…I allow 12 months credit, the whole amount is £105. 17. 7…If you find it more convenient to remit Furs and Skins than cash I will sell them to the best advantage. I hope you will be successful in your first tryal in the Trade…" Tilghman was all of 22 years old when he offered seasoned advice to a novice trader. Best known for being an aide to George Washington during the Revolution, Tilghman never realized his potential in the new republic as he died young of disease. Old tape repair on fold, very good condition.
