A Union teacher's 4pp. letter with original cover by Joseph B. Abbott, from New Hampshire had accepted a teaching position in Newbern NC. The letter retains its original cover, with Newbern postmark. Writing to his friend,Newbern, January 4, 1861. In part, The times are dark and gloomy with prospects of a general srorm. South Carolina has hurled herself from the Union. Other states will soon do the same & I should not be surprised if all the slave states did the same. The Northern slave states are not prepared to do what the Palmetto State has done yet, but the crack of the cannon in Charleston Harbor, I have not the least doubt, would break the bonds that bind them to the Union. ... Preparations everywhere here are being made for a general contention and a bloody war. I suppose you look on calm and peacefully, not expecting to sacrifice comforts and the glorious legacies bequeathed to us by our fathers in the cesspool of Civil War. ... The first blood may be shed in Charleston Harbor ... but I think blood must certainly be shed ..."
