Recipient Freedoms Foundation award, 1949; Page One Award Twin Cities, 1950-1954; Honorary Mention, 1949-1951; Headliner award, 1953; Christopher's award, 1953; Sigma Delta Chi award, 1957. Served to lieutenant (junior grade) United States Naval Reserve, 1944-1946, PTO. Member Association American Editorial Cartoonists. Original editorial signed cartoon, Scott Long", 11-1/2 x 14 on art board, captioned "Secretary Brannan Explains His Program," by Scott Long of the Minneapolis Tribune. Charles Franklin Brannan was the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1948 to 1953. In 1949, he advocated the Brannan Plan as part of President Truman's Fair Deal program. Brannan wanted to guarantee farmers income, while letting free market forces determine the prices of commodities. That plan was not enacted by the Republican controlled congress, which was focusing on the Cold War. Depicts the professorial Brannan writing out a confusing equations of math and hieroglyphic symbols on three classroom chalkboards as Mr. J.Q. (John Q. Public) looks on in puzzlement and confusion. Along bottom: "To secretary Brannan--with best wishes-- Scott Long". This is the artist's final draft, ready to go back to the engraving department for the newspaper's editorial page. On the back is a faint "clocked in" date of April 1949. Very good.
