Albumen photograph, 3" x 2-1/2" of Fort Totten defenses of Washington; attributed to Mathew B. Brady, c1863. It was built in 1861 and completed in 1863 to provide protection to the capital during the civil war. The fort is named for Joseph Gilbert Totten, a general in the War of 1812. President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument, sometimes shortened to President Lincoln's Cottage, was located 1/2 mile from this fort.
